Description

Our Door Community Wellness Center

Our Door celebrates our 1-year Anniversary with a two-night presentation of “This is My Brave: The Show" at the Keegan Theatre in Washington, DC. This show features 15 storytellers from the DC area using creative expression to end the stigma surrounding mental illness. You'll hear touching and inspiring stories told through original music, dance, poetry and spoken word, as well as personal essay. Funds raised will expand and strengthen programs and outreach in the Washington Metropolitan area. The vital roles Our Door Community Wellness Center serves in the community has never been more timely, relevant, or critical, and we rely significantly on your generous contribution to support our important work on behalf of our community and participants.

Our Door Community Wellness Center, established in May 2015 (the center opened to the public in October 2015) as a partnership between DC Department of Behavioral Health and Green Door Behavioral Health opened its doors to the general public in October 2015 as a consumer focused activity center. All staff, including Executive Director, Melinda Hasbrouck, publicly self-identify as being in recovery from mental health and/substance use disorders as well as other stigmatizing alternative lifestyles, conditions and/or situations (i.e., homelessness, HIV+ status, unemployment, LGBTQ).

Our Door provides mutual peer support, self-help, advocacy, education, information and referral services to assist people with mental health and/or substance use disorders regain control over their lives and recovery process. Through outreach activities (e.g., fairs, presentations, speaking engagements, expos), Our Door staff have engaged with over 5000 people in person – unmeasurable contacts have also occurred through untracked live stream activities of the Executive Director. From those engagements, we have had at least 500 follow ups for more information or collaboration. Inside the center, over 150 participants have registered and 10-15 persons, on average, visit the center during normal operating hours.

This is My Brave: The Show

This Is My Brave, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is the leading platform for individuals with experience to share their stories of living successful lives despite a diagnosis of a mental illness. This Is My Brave (TIMB) shows are community-based events held at local theaters or similar venues, where volunteer producers audition and select a cast of individuals who are ready to share their true stories of living with mental illness through poetry, original music, or essay. This is My Brave's debut show was in 2014 in Arlington, VA. The May 18th inaugural show included readings of touching personal essays, original music performances, and energetic slam poetry. There were incredible stories of inspiration and hope shared through this mental health theater production.
