MMC Theatre Production Workshop presents Our Country’s Good, the Olivier Award-winning play by Timberlake Wertenbaker, based on the novel The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally and actual events surrounding the founding of the first English penal colony in Australia, including a production of Geroge Farquhar’s The Recruiting Officer staged by felons in New South Wales in 1789. Wertenbaker’s play begins with a mystified Aboriginal Australian observing the first ship’s arrival, crammed with English convicts and the Royal Navy. Three proposed public hangings incite an argument: how best to keep the criminals in line—the noose or a more civilized form of entertainment? The ambitious Second Lieutenant Ralph Clark directs Farquhar’s play, but as the mostly illiterate cast of convicts rehearse, a sense of common purpose begins to take hold, and the young officer’s own transformation is as marked and poignant as that of his prisoners. Our Country’s Good is performed by students in the Theatre Arts programs of the College with direction by Kevin Connell, music direction by David Sisco, scenic design by Michael Tatasciore, costume design by Hailey Haywood, lighting design by Ray Recht, sound design by Toby Algya, properties design by Lilian Sun, and stage management by Laura Clinton.
