SUMMIT IS FREE & OPEN TO EVERYONE!

PLEASE register through Eventbrite even if you are only attending part of the Summit - it will help us communicate with everyone as we get closer to the event and to plan for food!

Our Breathitt is a community arts and health experience bringing together artists and Breathitt Countians from across Kentucky. The initiative is organized with IDEAS xLab (an artist-led nonprofit), and supported by:

  • The National Endowment for the Arts
  • Center for Creative Placehealing at the University of Louisville School of Public Health & Information Sciences,
  • University of Kentucky School of Art & Visual Studies,
  • HCTC Lees College, and
  • Numerous Breathitt County businesses, newspapers, governmental bodies, healthcare organizations and educational systems.

Our Breathitt Summit Objectives:

  • Connecting existing arts, culture and health initiatives to support the growth and wellbeing of Breathitt Countians.
  • Expanding the role that arts, culture, and heritage play in improving health and increasing economic opportunity, cultural tourism and entrepreneurship in Breathitt County.
  • Develop a 24 month action plan to jump start growth and attract resources to sustain it.


AGENDA:

Friday (10/11) – SKILL BUILDING DAY (3p-7:30p)

3:00pm - 5:00pm - Opening Learning Sessions

  • Opening Keynote: Emerging Cultural Role of Federally Qualified Health Centers in Rural Health
    Presenter: Derrick Hamilton DO - CEO/CMO/Physician Juniper Health
  • Interactive Arts Experience: My People, My Hope.

5:30pm-7:30pm - Community Dinner

  • Dinner Presentation: How arts and culture can support community wellbeing and growth.
    Presenter: Theo "Alan" Edmonds
  • Community Conversation: Engaging the faith & business communities in rural health development work. Dinner will also highlight work in progress from public health, film/arts and others to support families impacted by opioids and substance abuse (prevention, addiction, recovery).


Saturday (10/12) - CAPACITY BUILDING DAY

Focused on highlighting the work of the many artists, musicians and community members who have been part of the Our Breathitt initiative AND connecting the work with other ongoing community health and cultural tourism initiatives.

OUR BREATHITT: Artists, writers, musicians and community members will present the different components of the initiative that have taken place so far, and look to what’s coming up next.

Keynote: The Role of a Community College in Community Growth
Dr. Jennifer Lindon, President of Hazard Community and Technical College (HCTC)

Strategic Planning for Health & Cultural Tourism Development:
We will work together to chart a course for accelerating action, funding and impact. Lunch will be followed by an interactive planning session facilitated by the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development with a specific focus on exploring how we might combine Breathitt County’s arts, culture, tourism and healthcare assets to ignite entrepreneurship.

4-5:30pm: Take a break and get out to explore Jackson! We'll provide you with a list of local restaurants to try before heading back for The Breathitt County Opry!

The Breathitt County Opry

YOU DONT WANT TO MISS THE SUMMIT'S CLOSING FREE PERFORMANCE EVENT THAT IS OPEN TO EVERYONE!!!!

The 2-day summit will culminate with an artist showcase. The Breathitt County Opry will celebrate our people and community!! Featuring musicians, writers, quilters and arts and cultural collaborators who have come together over the past 12+ months (plus a few special guests) through the NEA supported project.
