Otello, opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Arrigo Boito, based on Shakespeare's play Othello. The opera takes place late in the fifteenth century in Cypress, Italy. General Otello returns from a successful battle to a cheering crowd and loving wife, Desdemona. Iago, Otello’s secretary, secretly hates Otello and plots to ruin him. Iago’s evil schemes begin with dishonoring Cassio (Otello’s favorite lieutenant) and ultimately ends with convincing Otello that Desdemona is unfaithful. The tragedy finishes when Otello kills Desdemona and then himself.
Otello will be performed in Italian with beautiful costumes and sets. The opera will be accompanied by a small orchestra conducted by Robert Butts, Ph.D. Featuring Peter Lewis and John Tedeschi in the title role; Karole Lewis and Victoria Wefer as Desdemona, Ted Dougherty and Minsu Park as Iago.
