About this Event

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease and a leading cause of chronic pain and disability. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most successful interventions which relieves the pain and restores the normal knee function, helping patients resume activities of daily living (ADL). However, knee replacement may fail over time for several reasons (e.g., wear, loosening, instability), and this results in a revision TKA, a complex procedure that requires extensive preoperative planning and surgeon's experience to achieve good outcomes. An alternative and relatively new treatment for end-stage OA patients is Knee Joint Distraction (KJD). This approach shows a high potential to improve the quality of life of patients by effectively postponing TKA and preventing revision surgery. Is knee distraction a reliable treatment option for knee OA compared to the successful knee replacement surgery? How different knee biomechanical phenomena can affect treatment selection and outcomes?

About the Speakers

Nico Verdonschot is the Scientific Director of the Technical Medical Centre (TechMed) at the University of Twente. He is a Full Professor of reconstructive and regenerative medicine at the Radboud Institute for Health Sciences (RIHS) and a Professor of implant biomechanics at the Department of Biomechanical Engineering at the University of Twente, setting up a research line related to the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system. His research interests are focused on orthopedic-biomechanical problems of the lower extremity, computer modeling techniques in combination with cadaveric testing, animal research and clinical studies to optimize diagnostic and evaluation tools for orthopedic patients, as well as optimized functionality and longevity of hip/knee prostheses. Since 2016, he is a visiting professor at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. In 2018, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Aalborg University, Denmark.

Wiebe Verra is an Orthopedic Surgeon currently working at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at MST (Medisch Spectrum Twente). His field of expertise includes hip replacement surgery, knee arthroplasty, knee revision, prostheses, and traumatology. Since 2010, he has worked on a number of hospitals and clinics including the Sint Maartenskliniek, Spaarne Ziekenhuis, Haaglanden Medisch Centrum (HCM), HagaZiekenhuis van Den Haag, and Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), where he also conducted research for improving total knee prosthesis treatment. His contribution to orthopedic research can be recognized through several publications on total knee arthroplasty surgery.

Edsko Hekman is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomechanical Engineering of the University of Twente. He received a BSc degree in science and engineering from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, MI, USA, in 1981, and an MSc degree in mechanical engineering from the Delft University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands, in 1986. After six years of developing equipment for medical research at Radboud University, Nijmegen, he joined the research and teaching staff of the University of Twente. His main research interests include the development of prosthetic, orthotic and robotic devices for restoration of gait and mobility, and in general, devices in the technical biomedical field. Besides, he is a member of the International Society of Biomechanics.
