Event description

Description

The Colorado School of Mines will convene its 2nd Summit on November 14, 2017. The first CSM Summit on “Reasonable Expectations for Mine Closure” held in 2016 highlighted the need and desire to continue the conversation and develop collaborative strategies that lead to action. We attach a summary of the 2016 Summit, and now invite you to attend the 2017 Summit, to be held again on the CSM campus.

The Colorado School of Mines and

The Payne Institute for Earth Resources

Present the 2017 Summit on

A Framework to Manage the Environmental Reality of

Orphaned and Abandoned Mine Lands

November 14, 2017

Colorado School of Mines, Golden

This high-level summit will be convened to discuss best practices and potential opportunities to continue our discussion and navigate the complex environmental, political and social aspects of managing orphaned and abandoned mine lands.

Three areas of discussion will structure our Summit:

1. Technical:

  • What does it mean to successfully address potential environmental issues on orphan and abandoned mine land?
  • How is the goal defined? How can we approach improvement vs perfection?
  • Examples of successful reclamation/remediation.
  • What leads to a watershed vs point source improvement approach?

2. Partnerships and Policy:

  • What types of partnerships have led to successful reclamations for the affected communities?
  • What stops or slows this partnership progress, and options for improvement?
  • Examples of ad hoc and prescribed partnerships and outcomes.
  • Opportunities for piloting additional partnerships

3. Administrative

  • Is there a common basis across state lines of information needed?
  • What are best practices in development of orphan and abandoned mine land inventory?
  • Is there a common basis for monitoring and an opportunity for monitoring partnerships?
  • Is the focus on point source or watershed scale?
