Description


The Shallow Water Lifeguarding blended learning course provides entry-level shallow water lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 5 feet deep. Lifeguard participants will provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS takes over. Have fun while learning lifesaving skills.

Prerequisites:

1. Be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.

2. Swim 100 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim freestyle, breaststroke, or a combination.

3. Tread Water for 2 minutes only using the legs.

4. Complete a timed event within 50 seconds:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke. Swim goggles not allowed.

  • Submerge to a depth of 4 or 5 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object at the surface of the water.

  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Certification Requirements:

1. Complete the blended learning online course prerequisite no less than 4 days prior to the start of class.

2. Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions.

3. Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during scenarios.

4. Demonstrate competency in all required skills.

5. Pass the final skills scenarios.

6. Successfully pass final written exams with a minimum grade of 80%. If a participant fails to reach the minimum 80% on the final written exam, a retest is allowed using a different test, provided that the learner has passed the practical assessment.


Certificate Issued:

The American Red Cross certificate for Shallow Water Lifeguarding/First Aid/ CPR/AED is 2 years.

Refund Policy:

  • 100% refund or one-time transfer to another class of ours up to 7 days before the first class start date. No refunds thereafter.

  • Exceptions to this may be considered with a documented medical excuse. Please email our office for more information.

  • Transfers allowed between 1-7 days prior to the class start date with a $75 fee paid. Email our office.

After the pre-test, it is our intention to PASS all students who are doing their best and putting in the effort. We will stay extra hours to help you to succeed and be competent, confident lifeguards able to save lives. Tip: Condition yourself for swimming laps a month or more out to do these water tests easy. Red Cross mandates we turn people away if they can't pass the water pre-tests for their safety and safety of the other students. No refunds are available at that time. So do swimming to be ready!
