Description

Organic Agriculture Professional Development Training with BioSteward Farms (NE Indiana)

Organic agriculture is a rapidly growing segment of agriculture globally, in the US, and in Indiana. The 2016 USDA Certified Organic Survey counted 420 certified organic farms in Indiana. This represented a 26.5 percent increase from 2015. Indiana’s 420 certified organic farms operated on 43,219 acres in 2016. As of May 2018, the USDA Organic Integrity database shows that the number of certified organic farms continues to grow in Indiana, with nearly 670 operations that include crops and/or livestock in their scope of certification.

This training is being offered to equip Indiana Conservation Partnership (ICP) staff with basic knowledge on organic production, markets, regulatory requirements, and resources and programs, in order for our respective agencies and organizations to better support the increasing number of organic operations in Indiana.

Topics covered:

  • Organic transition and certification process
  • Organic agriculture in the US and Indiana, market snapshot and trends

Registration process:
Space is limited due to the farm tour portion of the training. Initially, registrations are allocated to each of the ICP organizations. However, on August 16, we'll change to a general registration so that staff from any of the ICP organizations can register even if their organization's allocation is full. It will also be opened to non-ICP staff who serve farmers in educational capacities. Registration will be available through September 6 or until full. If your organization's allocation is full prior to August 16, feel free to contact Michael O'Donnell to be added to a waitlist.

Please contact Michael O'Donnell at modonnel@purdue.edu or 765-284-8414 with any questions.
