Event description

Description

Education Through Music is committed to providing the best professional development for music teachers in the New York City area. Join us as we kick off our 2017-2018 offerings with AOSA approved Level I and Level II coursework.

These offerings are designed to guide practicing music teachers through an exploration and understanding of the teaching & learning process using the Orff Schulwerk approach to music and movement education.

The AOSA curriculum for level I Pedagogy skills for teaching Orff Schulwerk will be explored and discussed through the use of Music for Children, Murray Volume I and pentatonic folk song material, movement and recorder. Level I teachers will actively learn to use speech, rhymes, poetry, playing pitched and unpitched percussion as well as singing, playing and improvising in pentatonic for creating an active music curriculum. Soprano recorder and movement in the Schulwerk classroom will be learned, in addition to creating student-friendly compositions in an elemental style.

Participants in level II will continue learning to improvise, compose, and teach musical materials representing the elemental style including the pentatonic modes, hexatonic scale, and diatonic modes. Level II will continue developing movement and recorder skills with the addition of the alto recorder and will work with folk materials as well as selections from Music for Children Volumes I, II, and IV (Murray edition).

Level I is a prerequisite to Level II.

The coursework will be offered at P.S. 343Q in Sunnyside, Queens. It is approximately 15 minutes via the 7 train (subway) from midtown Manhattan. Parking is free on the street, and there is meter parking about 1 block away where you can park for 4-8 hours. We anticipate the courses filling up very quickly. Please be sure to register early to secure your seat in the course.
