Overview:

Increasingly, infection prevention is an important component to include in the design and construction phases of healthcare facilities. The multidisciplinary construction team works together to identify specific materials, strategies and designs to mitigate potential risks. The goal of this work is to protect patients and healthcare workers from environmental pathogens. Preparing for these tasks requires the team to be familiar with the heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC ) system, water systems and plumbing options, containment barriers and equipment to monitor effectiveness of barriers for construction or renovation.

Objectives:

  • Describe the role of the multi-disciplinary team during design and construction in healthcare facilities.
  • Review current recommendations and standards for best practices for containment of waterborne and environmental pathogens.

Organizer

Association for Professionals in Infection Control & Epidemiology-Oregon & Southern Washington Chapter, Inc

The APIC Oregon and Southern Washington (OSWAPIC) chapter was formed in 1977. Through the years, the chapter has grown to encompass all of Oregon and part of Southern Washington State. Membership representation consists of acute care, ambulatory, long term care, and public health settings.

Our purpose is to influence, support and improve the quality and safety of healthcare through the practice and management of infection prevention and the application of epidemiologic principles in all health care settings.

OSWAPIC dedicates an hour long educational program at each chapter meeting to include topics relevant to our diverse areas of practice.  We have a strong networking relationship with Oregon Public Health as well as local health departments in Oregon, Southern Washington and our industry partners.

Additionally, members of OSWAPIC benefit from the development of supportive networking and friendship relationships that support professional and personal growth.
