The Institute for Learning, Access and Training at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Launched in 2008, the Institute for Learning, Access and Training at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra integrates dynamic long-standing education and community programs--some dating back to the early part of the 20th century--with new and innovative intiatives. With the vision of transforming lives through active participation in music, the Institute seeks to create and sustain connections to music for individuals and communities by sharing the extraordinary musical resources of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. Programs of the Institute offer a continuum of experiences that follow the age spectrum from the very young through young adults, and are grouped into three distinct program areas with separate, but overlapping goals:

Learning: introduce young people to the symphony orchestra, helping to develop and expand their enjoyment of music;

Access: provide entry points and opportunities for Chicagoland residents of all ages to attend and participate in musical performances, events and activities at Symphony Center and in community locations;

Training: offer hands-on instrumental coaching and high-level performance opportunities for youth, sharing the knowledge and skills necessary to train the next generation of musicians.

Institute initiatives, programs and events take place at Symphony Center, at venues across Chicago's diverse neighborhoods, and in classrooms and homes throughout Chicagoland and surrounding areas, engaging more than 200,000 people annually.
