Event description

Description

Music lovers of all genres are in for a treat when Opus Black String Quartet
performs an evening of eclectic contemporary music at Unity Hall on Saturday,
March 3 at 8pm. Imagine tunes by classic rock bands, heavy metal groups and
familiar TV/movie scores played by a talented, classically-trained string quartet!
That’s the exciting evening in store with OBSQ at Unity Hall’s unique listening room
venue.
This isn’t your typical string quartet. OBSQ is comprised of classically-trained female
musicians, all from diverse backgrounds but each with a love of creating alternative
music in various forms. Their performances include acoustic and electric string
instruments and songs such as the Beatles classic “Eleanor Rigby,” the theme from
Game of Thrones, and songs by Queen and Tool. In addition to being professional
performers, all members of the quartet are music educators with a passion for
exposing audiences (young and old) to edgy, contemporary music with a classical
twist.

Liz Friedel (1 st Violinist) is the originator of OBSQ along with Kristen Kopf (cellist).
She is the owner/operator of Music With Liz Contemporary Music Studio in Oneida,
and plays violin and fiddle in many other bands. She also runs the newly-formed
Mohawk Valley Community Orchestra with Allyson Sklar (Violist). Skilled in
jamming and improvising in many musical genres, Liz has an AS in Music
Performance and Music Education from Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.
Liz lives in Durhamville, NY.
Ally Brown (2 nd Violinist) plays Violin/Electric and Violin/Fiddle. Recently
returned to Syracuse from California, Ally is a string arranger and country fiddler, as
well as the owner/operater of FourWire Music. She studied Violin performance and
composition at Crane School of Music SUNY/Potsdam and Onondaga Community
College.

2
Allyson Sklar (Violist) plays classical viola and violin along with Irish fiddle with
the Utica Craobh Dugan Society. She is the owner/operator of the Valley Talent
Education Center and is a certified Suzuki Instructor. Originally from Tappan, NY,
Allyson studied music performance and education at the Manhattan School of Music.
She also runs the Mohawk Valley Community Orchestra with OBSQ’s Liz Friedel.
Kristen Kopf (Cellist) is the co-creator of OBSQ. She has been a professional
musician for 35 years and played with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. A resident of
Bridgeport, NY, she has been a music educator in the Cicero-North Syracuse Central
School District since 1992. Kristen has a Bachelors in Music Education and
Performance, along with Masters in both Music Education and Orchestral
Conducting from Syracuse University.
Admission for the Opus Black String Quartet performance is $10 for Unity Hall
Foundation members and $12 for the general public. The performance will begin at
8pm at Unity Hall, 101 Vanderkemp Ave, Barneveld. The doors open at 7:30 pm.
Refreshments will be available.
This event is sponsored by the Unity Hall Foundation, a not-for- profit organization
founded in 1995 to maintain the 1896 Hall as a center for the arts and community
activities in Barneveld, New York. The Hall is available for public and private
