Description

Opioid Problems, Treatment solutions is a 7-week online course intended primarily for addiction counsellors, mental health counsellors/nurses and allied service providers who work with people with opioid issues. The course presents information on problematic opioid use and on treatment strategies for people who are experiencing problematic opioid use.




What are the objectives of the course?

The training aims to:
• reduce stigma towards opioid use and users.
• reinforce that recovery is highly individualized and can incorporate a wide range of strategies, including pharmaceutical, non-pharmaceutical and harm reduction approaches.

Who is this training intended for?

This course is an intermediate-level course. It is intended for healthcare providers in Ontario who assist people with problematic opioid use, but who are not experts in the field.These individuals may include counsellors, peer workers, therapists, social workers, case managers, nurses, pharmacists, physicians, public health workers and long-term care workers.

The training is restricted to service providers working in Ontario.

What is the format of the course?

The course uses case studies, videos, additional resources, and interactive discussion forums to provide participants with opportunities to apply new knowledge and explore the course themes. One clinical expert and one lived experience expert will facilitate the course and participate in the weekly discussions.

What is the course content?

The course will include the following modules:

  • Pre-course orientation module, self-assessments and pretest
  • Module 1: Opioid use and misuse
  • Module 2: Factors affecting health and well-being
  • Module 3: Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT)
  • Module 4: Engaging and retaining clients in treatment
  • Module 5: Supporting recovery
  • Module 6: Client voices
  • Module 7: Building professional and community capacity
  • Wrap-up and course evaluation

What is the duration of the course?

You will receive the log in information one week before the course starts. As soon as you receive your password, you will have access to the pre-course assessment surveys.
The online course will start on Monday, July 16th, when you will have access to the first module. To facilitate discussions, the students will move through the content at the same pace. Another module will become available on each Monday morning for the duration of the 7 week course.

The course will end on August 31st. After the end of the course, you will have access to the online platform for another 2 weeks to complete any outstanding work.

Is the course accredited by CACCF?

The OPTS course received approval from Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF) for 20 Continuing Education hours towards the core functions of: Assessment, Client Education, Treatment Planning and Client Referrals.
