Event description

Description

The Baton Rouge Health District will host a presentation and discussion on the opioid epidemic with Keynote Speaker Dr. Anna Lembke on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center Auditorium (6400 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge). Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public, however seating is limited and registration recommended. The targeted audience includes physicians, pharmacists, social workers, nurses and other clinicians from throughout the healthcare community. Following Dr. Lembke's presentation, clinical leadership from the Baton Rouge Health District partner organizations will participate in a Q&A session with guests.

Dr. Lembke was among the first in the medical community to sound the alarm about prescription painkiller overprescribing, which has been a significant factor in the opioid epidemic. Dr. Lembke will provide a brief historical perspective on opioid prescribing, with a focus on how prescribing has changed; some of the neurobiological, sociocultural, and psychodynamic factors driving over-prescribing and over-consumption of prescription opioids; and ideas for how to target this public health crisis going forward.
