Opioid Continuing Education for CHWs and Other Healthcare Professionals

About this Event

Opioid Training for Community Health Workers (CHWs) and other healthcare professionals will be held on May 1, 2019 from 8:30am to 3:30pm at Senior Connection Center located at 8928 Brittany Way, Tampa, FL 33619.

Registration begins at 8:00am. The program will start promptly at 8:30am.

There is no cost to attend this training, which is being provided by Gulfcoast North AHEC and Gulfcoast South AHEC in collaboration with the Florida Community Health Worker Coalition (FCHWC). The purpose of this training is to raise awareness, of substance use disorders (SUDs) and increase engagement within the community regarding recognition of opioid abuse, overdose prevention, and safe disposal of prescription drugs. Vaping and Hookah Smoking will be covered as well.

The training will include the following topics presented by the following individuals.

Opioid Use and Opioid Use Disorder in Pregnancy

PANEL: Community Resources for Those Affected by Opioid Abuse

Panel of Community-Based Organizations will include:

  • USF College of Public Health / Moffitt Cancer Center
  • BayCare Faith Community Nursing
  • Central Florida Behavioral Health Network

Continuing education hours and credits will be provided, along with light breakfast, snacks, and lunch.

Any person who identifies as a CHW or a healthcare professional is welcome to attend this event. This training also serves as the Southwest Regional Symposium for CHWs.

What is a CHW? A CHW is defined as a frontline health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the CHW to serve as a link between services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.
