Opera Film Club presents The Magic Flute
Saturday, April 1, 2017 from 7:15 PM to 10:30 PM (IST)
Portico is delighted to invite you to the first season of our Opera Film Club.
In this Spring season, music journalist Michael Quinn will introduce each screening with some brief comments about the composers, the operas and the productions – all from the world’s greatest opera houses.
There will be an interval of 15 minutes when a complimentary glass of wine or tea/coffee will be served with the opportunity to discuss the film further. The evening will end in good time to catch the last ferry to Strangford at 10.45pm.
Mozart’s iconic singspiel seamlessly alternates seriousness and jollity, and combines philosophical ideas with a fairytale world of wondrous animals and magical musical instruments. Recorded live at Amsterdam’s Dutch National Opera in 2014, this inventive, hugely entertaining interpretation of Mozart’s perennial favourite is directed by Simon McBurney in a co-production with English National Opera. In Dutch with English subtitles. Duration: 156 minutes. Bring a cushion!
Michael Quinn is a widely published music and theatre critic who lives locally. He has written extensively for many leading journals including Opera, Opera Now, Gramophone and BBC Music. A regular contributor to BBC Northern Ireland’s Sounds Classical, he has written more than 400 programme notes for the likes of the BBC Proms, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Kirov Opera, Castleward Opera and Melba Recordings.
