Opening the Literary Mind: A Meditation Workshop with Matthew Brensilver
Sat, March 25, 2017, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM PDT
It’s hardly a novel thought that the mindfulness of meditation resonates with the attention and openness that shape the making and receiving of literary art. In this workshop and discussion, we’ll investigate this fruitful intersection. How can readers and writers use meditation in their practice? And how should the arts, and literature in particular, inform the traditions associated with mindfulness? Please wear comfortable clothes and feel free to bring whatever will facilitate extended periods of sitting, whether mats or cushions. Matthew Brensilver, PhD, a former Buddhist chaplain at the University of Southern California, teaches the intersection of mindfulness and mental health at UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center and with Mindful Schools. Matthew offers workshops, classes, and retreats retreats at Spirit Rock, the Insight Retreat Center, and elsewhere. An academic researcher on addiction treatment at the UCLA Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine, he is an emerging authority on the unfolding dialogue between dharma and science.
