The Open Table model isn't a way to make dinner reservations, it is a national faith-based model being used to engage young people impacted by foster care. In Cuyahoga County, about 120 young people age out of foster care each year. The Open Table group mentoring model uses 6-8 volunteers to take a role (education, health care, finances, housing, employment and transportation) and meet weekly with the young person to help coach, encourage, and support the young person in furthering their life goals.
How can the business community help?
“Open Table has the depth and breadth to be the single most contributing factor in changing the life of our youth in a positive, healthy and supported way. It has by far the most potential in the multitude of services we offer to be the most impactful in the lives of our youth.”--Thomas Pristow, Director of the Department of Health and Human Services in Cuyahoga County
Most of our volunteers are business people. We believe Cuyahoga County is filled with businesses interested in helping transform our city by investing time in our youth.
While many service projects are "done in a day" projects, this model allows for deeper more meaningful service for both the individual employees and for the company interested in helping shape our community. Businesses can also benefit by engaging employees in a shared purpose that brings people from different departments together to work with a young person.
There are many ways businesses can engage with this initiative:
- help employees learn about the opportunities to be a part of the table,
- sponsor/host tables,
- partner with a nonprofit to work with young people,
- offer internships or job training.
Please join us for breakfast to hear professionals from different venues share how volunteering on a table changed them. You will also hear youth share how having a table changed their lives.
Please register for this free event and share with other people in the community who might be interested in learning more about this unique opportunity.
When & Where
The Open Table model creates community and transformation with the homeless, working poor, young adults transitioning out of foster care, veterans, probation/re-entry and victims of human trafficking. It is a national faith based initiative that launched in Cuyahoga County 3 years ago working to transform people's lives through relationship.
