Description

Brief Description:
Learn the basics of managing, serving, and visualizing geospatial data using free and open-source web technologies. This workshop will provide an overview and hands-on exercises in working with geospatial data on the web. This will include:

  • Loading and querying spatial data in PostgreSQL, an open-source DBMS with support for geospatial data management and spatial processing

  • Setting up and configuring Geoserver to serve up geospatial data for use on the web

  • Creating a simple web page using Leaflet to visualize geospatial data served by Geoserver

  • Using Turf to perform geospatial processing tasks in a web browser with JavaScript

  • Taking a simple web map live with GitHub Pages

Along the way, the instructor will provide an overview of each of the technologies used, a review of concepts and terminology, and some basic usage examples. Students will leave the class with a basic understanding of how to set up and configure an open source web stack for geospatial, and an example of that stack running locally on their laptop (if available).

Students are expected to have some basic understanding of GIS concepts (raster vs. vector, desktop GIS familiarity), RDBMS (basic SQL usage), front-end web development (comfort with working with simple HTML, CSS and JavaScript), and working at a command line. The following resources may be helpful in preparing for this workshop:

  • SQL - https://www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-sql

  • HTML & CSS - https://www.codecademy.com/learn/web

  • JavaScript - https://www.codecademy.com/learn/javascript

  • Command line - https://www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-the-command-line

Students are encouraged to bring an Apple laptop if possible, as the class will be taught using macOS. Students may bring a PC, but be aware that some steps in the hands on exercises will be different if you're using a Windows environment.

This class meets once per week (6:00 - 9:00 p.m.) for five weeks/sessions: Feb. 8, 15, 22; Mar. 1, 8

Important Notes:

  • The workshop venue may change based on classroom availability. Registered students will be given advance notice if this is the case.

  • If the workshop is held, as planned, at CCSF's Mission campus, computers will be provided for workshop exercises. Alternately, students are welcome to bring their own laptops.

  • If the workshop must be moved to another venue, students will be required to bring their own wi-fi enabled laptops to class, either a PC or a Mac.
