OPEN SHOW #53: The Sudden Moment
Thursday, September 19, 2013 from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM (PDT)
San Francisco, CA
The Sudden Moment: Photo, Film, & The Evolution of New Media in The Age of Instant Access
The current estimate of the number of people using the internet is nearly 2.4 billion people. 40 Million photos are posted every day on Instagram alone. Every second, a thousand comments. Roughly 175 million Tweets a day. Eight new people come online every second. As these numbers expand so does our access to a broader array of visual content. More stories are told. More people are seen. As a consequence, photographers, filmmakers, and journalists are finding new ways and new challenges to getting their work seen.
Open Show, together with Impact Hub Media Lab and The San Francisco Chronicle invite you to join us for a conversation about the opportunities, impacts, and concerns in a world of on-demand access to content anywhere, at any time, on any digital device.
Presenters will include San Francisco Chronicle and Emmy Award winning photojournalist, Mike Kepka, two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee and Emmy Award winning photojournalist Richard Koci Hernandez, and the folks behind Hipstatmatic, a photo company aiming to inspire the world to live more beautifully and creatively.

Mike Kepka has been a staff photographer for The San Francisco Chronicle since 1999. He is the creator and sole producer of an award-winning multimedia column called The City Exposed, which he photographs, writes and edits each week. In 2013, he won both an Emmy in the Video Essay category for a segment on Gabriel Angelo, and for his work on a series called “The Greatest Bridge Ever Built,” for which he was the lead producer. He’s also the front man for a mystery band that derives inspiration from pickles and horses.
RICHARD KOCI HERNANDEZ
Richard Koci Hernandez is a national Emmy award winning video and multimedia producer and worked as a photojournalist at the San Jose Mercury News for 15 years. His work has appeared in Time, Wired, The New York Times, a National Geographic book and international magazines. In 2008, Richard was awarded a national Emmy award for the New Approaches to Documentary category for his executive producer work on the Mercury News video entitled, “Uprooted.” In 2003, Richard was the recipient of the James K. Batten Knight Ridder Excellence Award. His work for the Mercury News has earned him two Pulitzer Prize nominations.
Lucas Buick, 30, is the CEO and Founder of Hipstamatic, a photography company aiming to inspire the world to live more beautifully and creatively. A graphic designer turned entrepreneur, he’s also a graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point. Lucas spent time after college working as an editorial art director at various publications but realized he wanted to bring his own artistic vision to the world. Today, Lucas dedicates his work to helping people beautifully capture their lives, and is committed to making Hipstamatic a driving force for creativity across a multitude of platforms, based on his belief that art and visual storytelling can change the world.
Ryan Dorshorst was born and raised in the corn fields and cranberry bogs of Wisconsin. After graduating from Stevens Point with a BFA in Graphic Design he moved to Minneapolis where he ran a design and branding shop out of the side of a snowbank with Lucas for several years (although Lucas worked remotely from a different snowbank in Chicago). After launching Hipstamatic he decided it was time to move to a warmer locale and began a journey west that ended in San Francisco. In his spare time he enjoys building Legos and playing N64. He is the Co-Founder and President of Hipstamatic. He also cooks a pretty mean lasagna.
