About the class

This class for teenagers builds on the basics of the “Game of Make Believe” introduced in HB Studio's Acting for Young People (aged 9-13) class, starting from improvisations and moving into work on scenes. Young actors discover how to use themselves, their experiences and imaginations to create characters in a play or story. Their belief and whole-hearted commitment to the circumstances of the play make it real for the audience. In an atmosphere of creative play and self-discovery, they come to understand and experience the level of preparation and discipline needed to try for a place in the professional theater. About Marlene Mancini

Marlene Mancini has taught children for over 20 years at HB Studio. She directed many productions at HB Playwright’s Foundation including the annual Christmas show, THE SECOND SHEPHERD’S PLAY, cast entirely with children and most recently WHAT ARE OUR KIDS THINKING?, cast with eighteen teenagers. In 1990 she went to Los Angeles where she taught acting to children at The Chandler Studio with Charles Nelson Reilly—he worked with adults, she with children—coaching many young actors for roles in television, film, and theatre. During that time she was the assistant to Judd Hirsch, working with him on the television shows, DEAR JOHN, GEORGE AND LEO, and REGULAR JOE. She worked on the Broadway productions of A THOUSAND CLOWNS starring Tom Selleck and IN MY LIFE. Marlene teaches privately and coached the two young actors in the CBS series BLUE BLOODS. Learn more.
