Open Call for Choreographers – Orchesis Dance Company
We are looking for enthusiastic choreographers for the 2017 Orchesis dance season!
Orchesis is a NEW San Diego based dance company for adults focusing on one thing, and one thing only: to bring together passionate dancers of ALL levels and to have FUN! A lot of dance companies can be intimidating and inaccessible to people who aren’t professional dancers but Orchesis BREAKS DOWN those barriers with a NO-AUDITION policy creating an opportunity for anyone and everyone to dance and perform in the local community.
Orchesis is NOT a ‘drop in’ class schedule. We’ll be teaching fully choreographed routines over several months with weekly practices as we build, train, practice and perfect them as a team. Orchesis is open to dancers of all levels and we mean it - all you need is a love for dance and a willingness to learn and practice! If you’re interested in being a choreographer or co-choreographer, join us to find out ALL the juicy details at our general interest meeting happening on December 4th from 3PM-4PM at the Downtown Works (Downtown, San Diego).
If you have a style that you LOVE to choreograph or even if you’re not quite sure yet, we are looking for a wide variety of interest and talent! Not sure if you have the talent or professional experience? Don’t let that discourage you, formal professional experience is NOT necessarily required! Choreographers may be paired up as co-choreographers depending on interest, capacity, personal preference and experience. We will do our best to work within everyone’s preferences.
The general interest meeting will be informational only (no dancing) and to answer any and all questions. Not sure if it’s for you, that’s even more reason to come! An individual choreography audition (which will be explained at the meeting) will follow in the weeks after 12/4.
What is the commitment required as a choreographer?
The 2017 Orchesis Winter/Spring dance season runs from February 2017 to June 2017 culminating at the Orchesis Dance performance which will be held on Sunday June 25th. The commitment required for all choreographers is to hold weekly dance practice for 1 hour from the beginning of February until the performance on June 25th. Additionally choreographers will be required to hold/attend multiple dance practice the week of the dance performance.
I’m super passionate and want to make sure I have control over my dance, is that cool?
Wonderful! You sound like just the person we’re looking for – We want passionate people on our team! As a choreographer you are an integral part of the Orchesis dance team with autonomy over your dance(s), over the communication with your dancers, , with your music choices, etc.. We want you to feel like this is YOUR dance! Additionally choreographers will be able choose the practice day/time that fits their schedule BEST! You will also be responsible for coordinating any schedule changes with your dancers needed.
Do choreographers get compensated?
This is a volunteer position ONLY but we do plan on compensating you with LOTS of awesome stuff, beyond cash! As a choreographer you will be featured on the website, in the performance show program, on all of our marketing materials, and of course, you will receive TONS of weekly praise from your dancers! We will also be making choreography “swag” wear available for purchase.
