Want to tell a story as a werewolf? A trapped astronaut? A Valkerie? Stretch your storytelling voice in this fast-paced class where you write a character monologue and then narrate an improvised story as that character. Inspired by portmanteau story collections (think “Tales from the Crypt,”) and the Pulp magazines of the 1920s and 30s that anthologized short stories, this class explores storytelling through a combined character-and-improviser lens. Genres explored will be: Adventure, Horror and Science Fiction. There will be reading and viewing assignments throughout the 8 weeks of class and 4 weeks of performance. Pulp Playhouse is an award-winning format that ran from 1988-95 in San Francisco and helped launch the long-form narrative revolution. Pulp company members included BATS Alumni Mike McShane, Diane Rachel, Barabara Scott & Stephen Kearin and BATS Company members Rafe Chase, Paul Killam and Regina Saisi. BATS is pleased to offer this opportunity to study the technique with Pulp's creator and Artistic Director. Tuesdays August 2 - September 20 followed by 4 weeks of shows. Ends Oct 18.
