Event description
ONLINE: Intro to Memoir Writing Caterpillar Workshop is designed to help writers grow their craft while growing their sense of self-love

About this Event

The Online Intro to Memoir Writing: Caterpillar Workshop is a 6-week introductory creative nonfiction writing workshop for all levels!

We will meet via video conference in 90-minute sessions once weekly starting Tuesday, May 19 from 7-8:30pm.

The course is designed for those who are drawn to memoir writing but found the task daunting, and writers who have been beat down by harsh feedback in previous workshop experiences.

This course will focus on creative nonfiction, personal essay, and short memoir writing. As it can be painful to commit our own experiences to paper, this writing class is intended to guide writers gently, but productively. Your instructor, Natassja Schiel, has been teaching memoir writing for four years. She writes about her own difficult past as well. As a result, she understands how to guide new and seasoned writers alike through their personal writing journey with care.

This intro to memoir writing workshop will meet via video conference for 90-minute sessions once a week for 6 weeks:

1. Tues, May 19 at 7-8:30pm

2. Tues, May 26 at 7-8:30pm

3. Tues, June 2 at 7-8:30pm

4. Tues, June 9 at 7-8:30pm

5. Tues, June 16 at 7-8:30pm

6. Tues, June 23 at 7-8:30pm

The course also includes a scheduled one-on-one meeting with your instructor, Natassja Schiel.

NOTE: This class has a capacity of 8 students and fills quickly!

"I took multiple creative writing courses with Natassja and I can truly say that she changed the trajectory of my life. Her writing classes are a safe environment to write creatively about your truth. She mentored and guided me and I published what I worked on with her! Highly recommended!" - Deja W., Former Student

“Natassja established a supportive, intimate environment in the classroom from the beginning. This combination provided a truly unique experience in which we all felt safe enough to take risks with our stories, and stretch ourselves as writers. I think her gift is in seeing and making emotional connections in the writing, which is where I sometimes struggle as a more objective writer, so I feel I benefited greatly from her instruction and was extremely fortunate to have had her as an instructor." -Elayne B., Former Student

"When I was inspired to write an essay analyzing the representation of femme fatales in murder mysteries, I reached out to Natassja for help. She graciously assisted me, an inexperienced fiction writer, edit my first draft and figure out a structure that enticed readers. She followed up by sending essays she thought were similar and would inspire me. Soon after, I published that piece on The Rumpus!" - Chloe Cole, Fiction Writer

"Natassja is a warm and welcoming spirit, and a lovely writer. While working alongside her in our MFA program, I found instant connection with her as a fellow creative nonfiction writer and essayist, and I turned to her several times for thoughts and feedback not just on writing (though her expertise was invaluable there as well), but on the writing process itself. She has a deeply thoughtful understanding of the way that workshops are shaped by power and identity, and I’m confident that this will be a space just as warm and welcoming as Natassja is herself." -Rachel Charlene Lewis, Senior Editor at Bitch Magazine
