Using Literacy Screening Data to Support Students with Reading Difficulties

*This is a online course.

Audience:

Grades 3-5: General and Special Education Teachers, Reading Specialists, Literacy Coaches, Student Support Services Professionals, Directors/Supervisors of Special Education, and Principals

Description:

The data derived from universal reading screening assessments administered to students in kindergarten through grade 3 can provide school teams with valuable information about the students’ phonological processing abilities. The schools can use the data to create instructional approaches for the students’ unique learning needs.

This archived webinar, featuring Dr. Margie Gillis, explores different patterns of reading difficulty based on screening data derived from the curriculum-based assessments in Connecticut’s Approved Menu of Research-based Grades K-3 Universal Screening Reading Assessments. Dr. Gillis also provides guidance regarding informal diagnostic assessments that could be used to examine component reading skills in more depth, including an assessment decision tree. Additionally, she presents an overview of Tier 2 structured literacy instruction methods that support reading success for children in the early grades and tools for progress monitoring.

Educators participating in this webinar will expand their knowledge base regarding: patterns of reading difficulty based on reading screening data; informal diagnostic reading assessments; and Tier 2 structured literacy instructional methodology and progress monitoring tools.
