Event description
A six-part course, involving reading and fortnightly online discussions starting 5 April, about trade unions and the role of socialists.

About this Event

This six-part education course Marxism and Trade Unions is hosted by Workers' Liberty trade unionists.

Its purpose is to provide a solid grounding in some fundamental ideas about what trade unions are, and the role of socialists in unions and workplaces.

Although Eventbrite's format requires you to sign up for each session individually, please note that this is a course, and particpants are expected to follow it from start to finish. To register for the course, click 'Select a date' above and register for the first session.

The six sessions are:

1. Our Fantasy Union

2. The Marxist Critique of Trade Unions

3. The Bureaucracy

4. The Rank and file

5. The Role of Marxists

6. Workplace Bulletins

The course is designed to be participatory. We don’t want to educate you by lecturing you, but by encouraging you to think, question, disagree and develop ideas. The facilitator will explain the theme and format of each session; distribute materials, make sure everyone is clear about each stage, and make sure that everyone feels comfortable about contributing.

There will be some advance reading for each session, which will be sent to you in good time. You will have the chance to ask questions about it. There will then be a faciliated online discussion fortnightly on a Sunday early evening, starting 5 April. If you can not make a particular session, we will schedule a catch-up session for you.

The original course pack, including reading and further details, is here.

This information will be added to this event page in an appropriate format as the course progresses.
