Description
This 7–hour intensive online review course prepares current healthcare interpreters for both of the national certification written exams (CCHI and NBCMI) via reading materials and images and quizzes. Questions cover the following areas: prepare and manage an interpreting encounter, medical terminology and body systems, standards of practice & code of ethics and cultural competency. Both of the certification bodies, The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, which confers the CMI (Certified Medical Interpreter) and Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, which awards the CHI (Certified Healthcare Interpreter), include questions in these four areas in their written exam.
Objectives
Practice and master what you need to know about healthcare/medical interpretation to feel confident in preparation for certification at the national level.
The course is set in a series of modules. Each module contains several lessons that cover all aspects of the written text. Questions contain explanatory text which are also illustrated with pictures of situations you may find during an interpreting session.

Instructors
David Porta
Originally from Barcelona, David Porta has been living in Michigan for over 15 years. Trained as a scientist, and always interested in languages, he started translating earlier in his career – an activity that he never abandoned but complimented with interpretation and language instruction. David holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Barcelona and is a Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI-Spanish). He is also acting as Lead translator for the Spanish language as well as a Coordinator for Language Liaison Program.
