Event description
A joint meeting between West London Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the Israeli Committee Against House Demolition (ICAHD)

About this Event

In this Powerpoint presentation, Jeff Halper and prominent Palestinian activist and award-winning political caracaturist Mohammad Sabaaneh argue that the Matrix of Control which Israel has laid over the Occupied Territory has effectively eliminated the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian “conflict” and has produced instead a regime of apartheid.

Faced with apartheid and the permanent ‘warehousing’ of the Palestinians, they go on to outline the only just solution that Israel has left us with: a single constitutional democracy: one country, one citizenship, one parliament and one shared civil society in which its people's collective rights are also protected. The two speakers explore in depth how such a solution would work and what we need to do to reach it.

Tickets are £3 and there will be a collection at the end of the evening to contribute to the speaker’s travel costs and to support the work of West London PSC and ICAHD UK.

Resources from West London PSC and ICAHD UK will also be available.

Jeff Halper

Jeff Halper is an Israeli anthropologist and Director of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD). He has worked as a community worker for the Jerusalem municipality in the working-class Mizrahi (Middle Eastern) Jewish neighbourhoods of Jerusalem. Having done research among the Jews of Ethiopia in the 1960s, he served as the Chairman of the Israeli Committee for Ethiopian Jews.

Prof. Halper served as the head of Friends World College, an international college program, and has taught at universities in Israel, the US, Latin America and Africa. In addition to his many academic and political writings, he is the author of An Israeli in Palestine (London: Pluto Press, 2008) on his work against the Occupation and Obstacles to Peace, a manual for activism in Palestine/Israel. His most recent book is War Amongst the People: Israel, the Palestinians and Global Pacification (Pluto, 2015), which was shortlisted for the Palestine Book Award.

Jeff participated in the first (and successful) attempt of the Free Gaza Movement to break the Israeli siege by sailing into Gaza. He serves on international support committee of the Bertrand Russell Tribunal on Palestine, and was nominated by the American Friends Service Committee for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, together with the Palestinian intellectual and activist Ghassan Andoni.

Jeff and ICAHD are currently involved in a joint Palestinian-Israeli grassroots initiative – the One Democratic State Campaign (ODSC) – to formulate a political settlement based on the creation of one democratic state.

His work had been published in many Arabic newspapers including Al-Etehad, Al-Quds Al-Arabi, Al-Ghad Al-Ordoni, and Al-Akhbar Al-Lubnanieh and he is currently working at the Palestinian newspaper, Al-Haya Al-Jadeja.

Mohammad is a member of the International Cartoon Movement and he won many graphics awards, including third place at the Arabic Caricature Contest in 2013. their feelings, and with children who witnessed the Israeli assault to help them psychologically. In addition, Sabaaneh has been part of many specialised workshops specialising in developing their critical thinking.

Freedom House chose one of Mohammad’s works as one of the most important photos for the year 2016. The Congress Library archives some of Mphammad’s original artwork in their Cartoon Department while Georgetown University has utilized his cartoons in its scientific research.

In 2017 Sabaaneh was invited as ‘Palestinians influential intellectual young figure’ to represent the Palestinians at the UN in New York City.
