Even with the severe economic downturn, many jobs are available in private security.  People from all walks of life, young and old, male or female, and with different educational levels and diverse occupations are entering the private security work force.  Many employment opportunities are available in this occupation.  A "guard card" is needed for a person to be employed in this field.

The California Guard Card course is a one-day course required by the state agency, Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), for a student to obtain a guard card.  A guard card is the state license to work as a security officer in California.  There is no educational requirment to get the guard card.

Requirements

The student needs to be 18 years old or older, with no felonies or serious misdemeanors on their criminal history record.  A FBI and DOJ background check will be performed.

Cost

$60 for the one-day course in our Torrance office.  (Prices are different in our other locations.)  You are paying for the course only.  Current security guards pay only this for refresher course.  In order to get the guard card, you will later pay an additional $118 ($51 for FBI and DOJ background check, $17 for fingerprinting and $50 to BSIS for application fee.

You can pay the $60 tuition fee at this website.  Be sure to print a copy of your receipt.  Or you can pay cash on the day of the course.

Other Courses

40 Hours Training

The Guard Card course (Power To Arrest and WMD/Terrorism Awareness) is an 8-hour course.  After receiving the guard card, the state (per Assembly Bill AB2880) requires the guard to receive other training for a total of 40 hours of courses in the first year.  This training can be provided by the employing security company or by a training facility such as Academy Security Training.  AB 2880 requires another 16 hours of training within 30 days from the issue date of the guard card (not when you take the course) and another 16 hours of training within the first 6 months from the issue date of the guard card.

In addition, guards are to received 8 hours of refresher course annually.

We offer the other hours to guards and have named the first 16 hours as "Module A" and the next 16 hours as "Module B".  Each 16-hour module is $150.  Also, students can save money by paying for the entire 40 hours at one time instead of paying individually.  Paying for the $60 Guard Card course and and $150 for Module A and $150 for Module B totals $360.  By paying for the entire 40 hours, the cost is $300, which provides an overall savings of $60.

Here are the courses that comprise Module A and Module B:

Module A (first 16 hours - within first 30 days)

  1. Public Relations
  2. Liability and Legal Aspects
  3. Post Orders and Assignments
  4. Officer Safety

Module B (last 16 hours - within 6 months)

  1. Communications
  2. Observation & Documentation
  3. Crowd Control
  4. Handling Difficult People

 Firearms

Armed guard positions are available throughout the industry.  Guards have to be 21 years old or older and have a clean criminal history without felonies or serious misdemeanors.  FBI and DOJ background checks are performed.  BSIS requires a 14-hour firearms curriculum which includes 8 hours of classroom time and 6 hours of range time.

A requirement is that document proof of legal residence or citizenship needs to be provided.  If you are a US Citizen born in the United States, an official government birth certificate (not just a hospital certificate) will suffice.  Other documents you can provide are a US Passport, US military identification card, green card or other INS document.   A driver's license or social security guard will not work.
