Event description

Description

The devastating impact of violence on children has been recognised since the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1989. However, until the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, ending violence against children has not been recognised as global development priority. In spite of the commitments and the progress achieved over the 30 years of implementing the CRC and four years of the 2030 Agenda, we are yet to see a major breakthrough in ending violence against children in all its forms and for all children. In fact, protection from violence remains one of the most neglected areas of UNCRC implementation and one that is rarely prioritized in national SDG implementation plans.

While ending violence against children fairs low on the financial and political agenda, it is often prioritized by children, their parents and communities. It is also an issue viewed by experts, think thanks and practitioners as critical for realization of number of SDG targets and goals. In fact, according to the Copenhagen Consensus, targets related to ending violence against girls and boys are among the highest yielding targets in terms of return on investment within the 20r0 Agenda[1]. Solutions to violence against children are often seen as solutions to increase health, education, and gender equity outcomes as well as critical contributors to security and stability. Clearly, there is an opportunity to accelerate progress in ending violence against children for greater good that is not fully recognized by the national and global policy makers, donors and influencers.

The high-level week of the UN General Assembly will convene five high-level meetings at Heads of State and/or Government level. They are informally known as the Summits Week and are expected to result in a set of Accelerated Actions across all the main themes of the 2030 Agenda. This is an opportunity to recognize the importance ending violence against children as transformative strategy to achieve peaceful, stable and inclusive societies. The purpose of this event is to bring together senior advocates and policy makers to discuss the solutions to violence against children, how they may be employed for greater good, and how they can be accelerated through increased investments, partnerships and actions.
