Event description

Description

Communities are the drivers for inclusive and integrated societies. Examples across the world have demonstrated that more inclusive communities have significant benefits, economically, socially and culturally.

Bristol is a global city with 16% of the population born outside the UK. Over 91 languages are spoken on our Bristol streets. It's a great city, but can also be a fractured city with different communities living parallel lives.

Join us for a facilitated discussion about inclusion and integration where migrants, refugees and Bristol’s host communities share their experiences and voice what it means to them and their community.

Co-hosted by the Mayor of Bristol, the International Organization for Migration (IOM-UN Migration) and Bristol Refugee Festival.

What to expect:

17:30-17:35 Introduction by Bristol Refugee Festival

17:35-17:40 Opening Statement by Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees

17:40-17:45 Welcome from IOM Chief of Mission Dipti Pardeshi

17:45-18:15 Bristol community members panel discussion

18:15-19:00 Facilitated discussion about what inclusion and integration means to you

Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.

This year, Refugee Week occurs on 17-24 June and its theme is “You, me and those who came before.”

Bristol has held Refugee Week events since it began in 1998. Bristol Refugee Festival CIC was formed in 2017 to manage the increasing volume of events taking place in and around Bristol. Bristol Refugee Festival continues to work closely with the national office and hopes to host their first South West conference in 2020. This year, Bristol Refugee Festival takes place from 11-30 June, 2019.

IOM- UN Migration has offices in over 100 countries with over 10,000 staff globally. In the UK, IOM’s work encompasses resettlement and integration, community cohesion, combatting human trafficking and modern slavery, diaspora and development, migrant assistance, supporting migrant children and migration policy and research.
