On the Frontlines Against Militarism & Extremism:
Women's Stories from the Middle East, North Africa and Asia

Monday, March 16, 6:30pm-8:00pm
Daj Hammarskjold Library Auditorium, UN Headquarters

Too often, we hear reports on extremism and militarism from outside sources, when what is needed now, more than ever, are the voices of those most affected—the women human rights activists living through and fighting against these systems. Join Peace is LoudThe Permanent Mission of Norway to the UN, the Overseas Press Club of America and the International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN) for an interactive panel discussion among women human rights activists from the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. The event will also highlight film clips from the upcoming multimedia project The Trials of Spring, featuring women activists in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as clips of interviews conducted with women activists in the region on challenging extremism and militarism.

A brief reception will follow.

Opening remarks by Ambassador Geir O. Pedersen, Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations

Panelists include:

  • Rukmini Callimachi, Foreign Correspondent, The New York Times (Moderator)
  • Rana Allam, Journalist, Daily News Egypt
  • Mossarat Qadeem, Pakistani peace activist and Founder of PAIMAN Alumni Trust
  • Gini Reticker, Award-winning Filmmaker and Director of The Trials of Spring
  • Sanam Anderlini, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN)

All attendees must RSVP here by Thurday, March 12. Please plan to arrive early as seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. If you do not have valid accreditation (UN Pass or CSW accreditation), please state this in your RSVP and plan to arrive by 5:45pm at the latest to receive your ticket at the entrance gate at East 45th and 1st Avenue.
