Description

Fort Collins’ newest contemporary theater presents Ernest Thompson’s 1979 Broadway hit On Golden Pond. Directed by Christopher Huelshorst, it features actors Jonathan Farwell, Deb Note-Farwell, Debbie Swann, Luke Stephens, Jessica MacMaster and Mark Terzani, October 7th thru 22nd, at the Masonic Temple in Fort Collins Old Town. Tickets available at eventbrite.com.

Oscar and Tony award winner On Golden Pond is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing eighty, with heart palpitations and a failing memory—but still as tart-tongued and observant as ever. Ethel, ten years his junior and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched, and continue to enrich, their long life together. They are visited by their divorced daughter and her dentist fiancé, who then go off to Europe, leaving his teenage son behind for the summer. The boy quickly becomes the “grandchild” the elderly couple have longed for, and as Norman revels in taking his new ward fishing and introducing him to classic literature. Norman learns some lessons about modern teenagers—and their slang—in return.

Presented to great critical and popular acclaim at its debut, then on Broadway, then as a Hollywood blockbuster, this touching, funny, and warmly perceptive study of a spirited and lovable elderly couple facing their twilight years introduced writer Ernest Thompson, who would become a significant playwright in 1970s theater scene. In this production, PopUp’s Founder and Artstic Director, Christopher Huelshorst, will take this nearly forty year old classic, and bring it to modern day and give it a new home in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Like many PopUp shows, this theatrical event puts its audience in the round and makes them feel as though they are sitting in Norman and Ethel’s summer cabin on the lake, giving the audience a theatrical experience found only at this newly created contemporary theater.

PopUp’s presentation of this timeless story features local actors, including award winning Jonathan and Deb Farwell as Norman and Ethel Thayer. The Farwells have received critical acclaim for their work together and apart. Jonathan recently won his second Colorado Theater Guild’s Henry Award for Best Actor, for his 2015 portrayal of Gunner, an elderly man dealing with Alzheimer’s in Bas Bleu’s The Outgoing Tide, under Deb’s direction. In 2016, Deb worked with PopUp recreating legendary opera diva, Maria Callas, where she performed each night to standing ovation, in Master Class. However, this beloved couple has not been seen on stage together for several years, making this a special moment for community and cast alike.

As the play ends, and as Norman and Ethel’s summer wanes, so does their brief idyll, and in the final, deeply moving moments of their story, Norman and Ethel are brought even closer together by a moment of crisis. Time, they know, is now against them, but the years have been good and, perhaps, another summer on Golden Pond still awaits.
