New York Law School is accredited to offer on demand streaming CLE credit. By purchasing a ticket, you will receive a link to the streaming video and written materials. The CLE cost is $100. NYLS has a generous scholarship policy. After you have registered and made your payment, we will email you the user certification form and instructions for earning CLE credit.

This training educates attorneys, law students, volunteers and interested people about the UN Convention on Refugee Protection, U.S. domestic treatment of Refugees and the basics of helping someone seeking to apply for Asylum in the United States. The last hour of the program presents information for U.S. attorneys who wish to advise people about seeking refuge in Canada.

Attorneys will be able to secure Continuing Education credits. 4.0 Credits.

1:30 to 2:30 The History of the Refugee Convention, World Refugee Day, and the Basics of U.S. protection today. [1 credit]

Speakers: Mark Von Sternberg of Catholic Charities and Adjunct Professor at Pace Law School and St. Johns Law School with pamela goldberg, consultant, formerly with the UN High Commission on Refugees in Washington D.C.

2:30 to 3:00 The Immigration Court Help Desk and the Role of Pro Se Clinics [.5 credits]

Understanding the new Immigration Help Desk at the Immigration Court in New York, how to volunteer and assist at a pro se clinic.

3:00 to 4:00 Best Practices in Preparing an Asylum Application [1 credit]

Understanding the Essentials of the legal claim, meeting the evidentiary requirements, the standards of law and building the factual record.

4:45 to 5:50 Refuge in Canada? [1 credit]

Speaker: Jacqueline (Jackie) Bonisteel, an associate at the corporate Immigration Law Firm in Ottawa Canada and a member of the Canadian Cross Border Legal Team.

Growing numbers of people are seeking to leave the U.S. and are traveling to Northern NY borders. Understanding the basics of Canadian Refugee Procedure and the interplay with the Safe Third Country agreement between the United States and Canada.
