Event description

Description

How does economic inequality threaten the social fabric of the Bay Area? And what are we going to do about it together?

Part of the belief in American social mobility rests largely upon our faith that there is opportunity in education. Despite soaring college costs and historically high levels of student debt, an investment in a college degree still predicts higher earning power over a lifetime of work. Having access to quality primary education is one indicator of success in higher education. So how does the Bay Area score when it comes to residents at lower income levels getting access to quality schools? Are we making progress, or are the policies and systems we have in place replicating the income inequality in the Bay Area? And what can we do to turn the tables? Can quality public education level the opportunity and equity gaps?

KQED's Mina Kim hosts a distinguished panel of experts discussing the impact of economic inequality on Bay Area public education, how that redounds upon the health of our local democracy, and how to achieve full and equitable funding for schools.

Guests:

  • Kyla Johnson-Trammell, Superintendent, Oakland Unified School District
  • Patrick Murphy, Policy Director and Senior Fellow, Public Policy Insitute of California
  • Sean Reardon, Professor of Poverty & Inequality in Education, Stanford Graduate School of Education

Co-presented with SPUR, this event is part of KQED On Common Ground, an initiative bringing people together for civil discourse, featuring KQED journalists hosting provocative conversations about politics and policy, art and culture, and science and technology. Reckoning with the force of disagreement among us about how to face a future of economic, cultural, and environmental uncertainty, this series asks what are our shared responsibilities to the common good.
