On Air and ON! The Live Studio Interview, Alana Casanova-Burgess

In this 3-hour workshop, students will learn about the art of the live studio interview.

Topics covered include:

--How to come up with innovative guest ideas

--How to prep yourself (or your host) with questions and research

--How to reframe news stories in new and compelling ways through live Q&A

Students will learn how to thoughtfully and efficiently book guests. They will also discuss how their choices impact the voices, communities, and perspectives we hear from everyday on podcasts and public and commercial radio stations.

Alana Casanova-Burgess is a producer for WNYC Studio's On The Media, a national public radio show and podcast about free speech, the power of the press, and the danger of spin. She previously spent nearly five years with WNYC’s Brian Lehrer Show, the best local news talk show in the land, where she produced segments on everything from police-community relations to art and neuroscience (plus a public radio national election network). In 2016, On the Media earned the American Bar Association's Silver Gavel award for a special hour about the opacity of the Supreme Court. Her work has also been recognized by the ONA, PRNDI and the Council on Contemporary Families. She has recently reported for On the Media from Puerto Rico and Brazil. Alana is a bilingual native New Yorker with roots in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Dominican Republic, and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. When she’s not thinking about radio, she’s booking airplane tickets and getting the **** out of here.
