Event description

Description

Join the Oregon Medical Education Foundation (OMEF) for a unique evening featuring our special guest, Dr. Lucy Kalanithi, MD, FACP of the Stanford School of Medicine.

Kalanithi was married to Dr. Paul Kalanithi, who detailed his struggle with Stage IV lung cancer in the New York Times bestselling memoir When Breath Becomes Air. Dr. Lucy Kalanithi wrote the epilogue to her husband’s book.

In this intimate, interview-style event, Dr. Kalanithi will deliver a message of hope in memory of her husband, speaking about the joy of living and finding meaning in the practice of medicine. The event will be especially relevant for medical and physician assistant students as they begin their careers and contemplate their role as the next generation of Oregon’s healthcare providers.

Dr. Kalanithi’s interview will be conducted by award-winning broadcast journalist Laural Porter of Portland’s KGW News. A veteran news anchor, Porter’s previous interviewees include President Barack Obama and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

An internal medicine physician and faculty member at the Stanford School of Medicine in Palo Alto, CA, Lucy Kalanithi completed her medical degree at Yale, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society. She completed her residency at the University of California-San Francisco and a postdoctoral fellowship training in healthcare delivery innovation at Stanford’s Clinical Excellence Research Center.
