Health Care in Its Simplest Form: Access, Affordability, Quality

(Reception to Follow)

Sylvia M. Burwell is uniquely qualified to discuss the recent evolution of the American health care system. As Secretary of Health and Human Services, she managed a trillion-dollar department and oversaw the implementation of the Affordable Care Act starting in 2014. President Barack Obama heralded her as a “proven manager” who “knows how to deliver results.” She has held two cabinet positions. In addition to her service at HHS, she has been the director of the Office of Management and Budget.

President Burwell is American University’s 15th president, the first woman to hold that role.

She has held leadership positions at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, serving as chief operating officer and president of the Global Development Program. She was also president of the Walmart Foundation, where she ran its global Women’s Economic Empowerment efforts. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Government from Harvard University and a BA in Philosophy, Policy and Economics from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. President Burwell is a native of Hinton, West Virginia. She and her husband Stephen Burwell are the parents of two young children.
