Event description

Description

The new album, Jallo, from Olga Cerpa and Mestisay moves through a space full of light, good energy, root sounds, and Atlantic colors. It is a unique blend that comes together in diverse repertoire that has origins in America and Africa, mixed with the roots of the group's homeland in the Canary Islands. The culturally-rich archipelago is known as the main port of the first wave of Spaniards that settled in Puerto Rico, which explains the influence of the Canary Islands in Hispano-Caribbean traditions.

"Jallo" is an island word that refers to the objects that the sea throws to the Canary shores. This concept is used by Olga and Mestisay to create songs inspired by the musical influences that reach the beaches of their homeland. Latin America, Portugal, Cape Verde or the African continent leave their mark on the album, as well as revisited island songs that have been "found" and rediscovered.

Extended Play is a series of free concerts curated by the Old Town School of Folk Music and funded by the Chicago Community Trust. Extended Play presents high calibre world music artists at three venues across the city; The Old Town School of Folk Music, the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center, and the DuSable Museum of African American History. Artists are selected in close consultation with partner venues to ensure that they reflect the programming objectives and mission of all institutions.
