Event description
Environmental leadership journeys for Cadettes (Breathe), Seniors (GIRLtopia and Sow What) and Ambassadors (Your Voice and Justice).

About this Event

CADETTES complete requirements for the Breathe journey, focused on air and nature, health, and climate change. SENIORS complete requirements for GIRLtopia or Sow What (food systems) journeys. These journeys have many common environmental leadership and activism elements, and girls can choose their focus in the online and other activities.

Topics include local and global trends, community equity, connections to climate change and Covid-19, critical thinking, values, and leadership. Cadettes will make plans for future younger troop activities, and Seniors-Ambassadors will develop a social media advocacy campaign. Activities will be completed individually and with partners, and will take 2 to 3 hours between each meeting. More info about journeys

Five weekly afternoon 50-minute meetings will be held on Zoom videoconference platform, at the times of TICKET CHOICE = MEETING TIMES. The 1:00-1:01 pm meeting time on 12/30/20 is a place-holder and doesn’t exist! Balboa Program Center is shown as the location, but all activities will be online, at home, and in neighborhoods.

Journeys are led by Anne Fege, outdoor volunteer, longtime Girl Scout, and urban forester--and co-facilitated with an Ambassador . Leaders are encouraged to invite-organize your TROOP to sign up and complete this journey together, with some or all troop members. Adults are invited to participate, and one ADULT is requested as the “second adult” for each online meeting. To inquire about scheduling dedicated meetings at your regular TROOP MEETING TIME, or combining 2-3 troops from a SU, contact Anne Fege afege @ aol.com . These journeys will be offered in 2021, in addition to Citizen Science journeys. Register for 2021

BADGES: Four Cadette STEM and outdoor badges were adapted this summer with online and San Diego-based activities: Eco-trekker, Night Owl, Outdoor Art Apprentice and Trees. They are posted at http://sdrufc.com/summer/ , and can be followed by troops or individual girls.

When the journeys were offered this summer, there were about 30 percent no-shows and drop-outs, so sometimes groups had to be combined in the first week of meetings (toward optimal group interaction with 8 to 10 girls). Leaders will be asked to check on pre-work before the first meeting (usually watching and reflecting on three short videos). Monitoring the girls’ participation during the journeys is optional. The journey is limited to girls and adults who are members of Girl Scouts San Diego (even if information about the journey event has reached girls in other states).
