Event description

Description

On Sunday, October 15, the Conococheague Institute will sponsor a self-driving tour of old rural stone houses in Western Franklin County. Located in the Cumberland Valley, once frontier country in the Welsh Run/Mercersburg community, these homes are on country roads with a rural context and views of the nearby Appalachian Mountains.

The showcase homes are:

  • The Irwin/Harrison house at Anderson Road near the old Irwin/Anderson grist mill on the Conococheague Creek
  • The old Welsh style Duffield house at 12514 Garnes Road
  • The Desmet Family house at 9210 Buchanan Trail West near Heister’s Bridge
  • The Leidy Family house at 5606 Steele Road, south of Lemasters
  • The Hartung house at 8920 Blue Spring Road, south of Mercersburg

Each home is filled with facts and fantasies of years gone by enhanced by unique features and furnishings that will inspire visitors to recognize the history of this area. This is a fundraiser for further restoration of the Negley Log House grounds and to build a bake oven on the site.

Tickets will be available this summer at various locations, which will be announced later. Cost of admission is $20 and includes a map and histories of each home.
