Description

Newspapers provide insightful glimpses into the daily lives and activities of communities across the country. From reporting of “flying” business trips, tales of visits from relatives near and far, accounts of who’s on the sick list, descriptions of affrays and criminal activities, sharing of educational and occupational achievements, listings of social and civic engagement activities, and the expected vital records such as births, marriages and death, newspapers hold vast amounts of information just waiting to be discovered. The Tennessee State Library and Archives’ newspaper collections, in print, microfilm, and digitized formats, contain a plethora of informational nuggets yet to be untapped. In this workshop session, genealogist Taneya Koonce will navigate attendees through the benefits of using newspapers and will highlight strategies to make the newspaper research process even more fruitful when putting together the puzzle pieces in genealogical and historical research.

Ms. Koonce is an avid genealogist with more than 18 years of professional experience in information organization and management. She has a strong interest in technology and coordinates several genealogy indexing projects, including newspaper indexing databases. Ms. Koonce is the State Coordinator of the TNGenWeb Project, is a Board Member of the Middle Tennessee Genealogical Society, and is President-elect of the Nashville Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. Among Taneya’s genealogy publications are regular contributions of newspaper obituary transcripts and abstracts to Ansearchin News, the quarterly magazine of the Tennessee Genealogical Society, for which she regularly uses the TSLA newspaper collections.

The session will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at the Library and Archives auditorium. The Library and Archives is located at 403 Seventh Ave. N., directly west of the Tennessee State Capitol in downtown Nashville. Free parking is available around the Library and Archives building.

Although the presentation is free and open to the public, registration is required due to seating limitations in the auditorium.
