Event description

Description

Ola I Ka Pū Hala, the inaugural Hawaiian weaving conference on Maui, will be held right here on the grounds of Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel. The event is hosted and organized by Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel and supported by nā kumu ulana. Master weavers will share their knowledge and skills, thereby ensuring the perpetuation of the beloved and ancient art of Hawaiian weaving.

Ola I Ka Pū Hala means the Pū Hala(Hawaiian pandanus) lives. There is life in the pū hala, and because of the pū hala, there is life. As an indigenous Hawaiian plant, pū hala has been an important part of every Hawaiian family. People across the Pacific used every part of the plant. Laulaha (hala leaves) are widely used and woven into mats and pillows. Seeds and fruits are used for lei, and roots may be used as cordage fiber.

Students, from near and far, will be immersed in weaving during this conference. They will spend four days learning from master weavers from throughout Hawaiʻi. Project supply kits will be available for purchase from nā kumu. All levels of ability, from beginner to advanced, are invited. Types of weaving include lauhala (hala leaves),ʻieʻie (woody vine woven into baskets), kōkō (knotting a net carrier) and ʻupena (fish net). It will be a time of learning, sharing and fellowship. There will be a craft fair, displays, presentations and a silent auction.
