Workshops for early childhood (PK-3rd), elementary English language arts (PK-5th), and secondary English language arts (6th-12th)

About this Event

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is excited to announce free professional development workshops for the 2019-2020 school year. These workshops are being offered in different regions of the state and are designed to support educators with effective instructional strategies aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards. These workshops are perfect for educators looking to identify a new Professional Learning (PL) Focus or deepen expertise in an existing PL Focus. Schedule

  • Morning Session: 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
  • Lunch Break :11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Afternoon Session: 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.

  • Please bring a large, charged device--preferably a laptop or tablet.

Early Childhood (PK-3rd grade)

Exploring Play Throughout the School Day

  • Dive in to the types of student inquiry that provide structure in a balanced early childhood classroom and be ready to empower our youngest learners as they explore their world through play to increase engagement and accelerate achievement.
  • Led by Senior Director of Early Childhood, Jennifer McKay.

Elementary ELA (PK-5th grade)

Decode the Modes: Elementary Writing Instruction

  • By studying mentor texts, teachers will learn techniques for teaching the narrative, informative, and opinion modes of writing.
  • Led by Director of Elementary ELA, Deb Wade.

Secondary ELA (6th-12th grades)

Teaching Secondary Writers Through Inquiry

  • After learning three approaches to inquiry in the secondary ELA classroom, teachers will study mentor texts to learn how to teach various aspects of writing.
  • Led by Director of Secondary ELA, Jason Stephenson.
