Welcome to your exciting painting journey! From dabbler to professional, I am delighted to be your guide to becoming comfortable and confident in the painting process. While covering painting principles, I specialize in meeting the participant where they are with a personalized approach.
We will cover how to set up your easel, palette and paints, discover how the eye works, and work on skills to capture a 3D object onto a flat canvas. I know you are going to AMAZE yourself. This is an exciting place to be because you will see great improvement as you learn how capable you are!
Each week we will incorporate a different principle into our painting practice. We will implement short exercises to accelerate learning. These exercises are fun and enlightening.
Topics we will cover are:
1- How to Create An Eye Catching Design
2- Light And Dark, You Create Value
3- The Magic Behind Creating Form
4- How To Express Mood With Color
5- Your Next Steps Forward
There is so much to think about in painting we will focus on one principle at a time with fun exercises. Repeating these help us learn faster and make it easier to integrate them into our artistic magic bag to be pulled into our painting process as needed.
With over 40 years of professional painting experience, I’m ready to guide and inspire you to understanding your unique voice and play to your strengths and at the same time strengthen your weaknesses.
I look forward to working with you on your artistic journey.

Learning To See Supply List
Recommended paints:
I use primarily Classic Artist Oils and variety of others such as Rembrandt, Winsor Newton, Gamblin, and Michael Harding. Any brand is fine as long as it doesn’t contain too much filler. Bring what you have.
Your paint can be purchased online or at Jerry’s Artarama in Austin.
Recommended colors: these are a must have but if you have other colors feel free to bring them.
White
Cad Yellow
Cad Red or Permanent Red
Alizarin Permanent or Quinacridone Red
Ultramarine Blue
Veridian Green
Black
Recommended Brushes: I recommend a started pack of brushes that you can buy online or in person at Jerry’s Artarama in Austin. https://www.jerrysartarama.com/pro-stroke-premium-white-bristle-brush-sets It doesn’t have to be this set, but make sure there is a variety of sizes and shapes in whatever you choose.
Other necessities:
Turpenoid or Gamsol in a covered turp container- oderless only please!
Portable easel and palette- I use my Coulter Easel the most but there are a lot of other great sets out there. I like the mini to carry around outside, but if this is also going to be your studio easel you might want to go bigger with the compact or standard. https://artboxandpanel.com/collections/31359
If you already own an easel and palette bring whatever you have. If you are a complete beginner and don’t want to invest in an expensive easel yet there are lots of very inexpensive options out there. Email me at brucebingham@gmail.com and I might be able to find you something on loan.
Grey disposable palette paper- I use Grey Matters without the thumb hole
Small sketch book / inexpensive paint pad for all mediums
Brush pens in light, medium and dark values
View finder
Paper towels
Photos you have taken and printed out in 8x10 in black and white in color that you want to paint and a clear sheet of paper protector to put it in. Ruler and wet erase marker in red.
Extra colors NOT required: Other colors I use are Hansa Yellow, Indian Yellow (Winsor Newton), Yellow Ochre, Sepia (Rembrandt), and Portland Grey Deep (Gamblin), Quinacridone Violet, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue. We will focus on using a fairly limited number of color in each painting but bring any extra colors you already have if you’d like.
Canvas- You can use canvas or gessoed panels. https://www.jerrysartarama.com/canvas-surfaces/panels/primed-and-gessoed-panels/ampersand-value-panels-smooth-finish
You can get a 9x12 single flat 1/8th inch #52890 for $5.27 per panel. If you already have some painting surfaces you can bring those too.
We are here to learn to paint better AND most of all to have fun!
