Janus v. AFSCME:  What Does It really Mean?

On February 26, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Janus v. AFSCME. Mark Janus, a public employee in Illinois, sued the union representing the bargaining unit where he worked because he did not want to pay a “fair share fee.” The Supreme Court will decide whether unions representing public-sector employees can compel workers who have declined to become members to pay the union an “agency fee” or “fair share fee.” A panel of labor practitioners representing both management and unions will discuss the Janus case, the arguments made before the Supreme Court, the likely outcome, and the impact this high profile case will have here in Ohio.

Presented by Ronald G. Linville, Esq., and Daniel J. Guttman, Esq., of Baker & Hostetler LLP with guest presenters:   Sean Grayson, Esq., General Counsel, AFSCME, Ohio Council 8;  and Joseph Hegedus, Esq., Attorney, OPBA

This session will address not only the legal impact of harassment in the workplace but will also provide participants with best practices for investigating and responding to allegations of sexual harassment. Practical tips will also be shared with participants to help them identify workplace warning signs and inappropriate conduct.
