About

Income inequality in the United States has increased significantly since the 1970s after several decades of stability. People today live in a starkly unequal society as America’s top ten percent now average nearly nine times as much income as the bottom ninety percent. Racial inequalities have manifested in American society ranging from racial disparities in wealth, poverty rates, housing patterns, educational opportunities, unemployment rates, and incarceration rates. In his book Wealth of Nations, Scottish philosopher and free market theorist Adam Smith recognized that rising real wages leads to the "improvement in the circumstances of the lower ranks of people" and are therefore an advantage to society. The bottom line is that Project teams should focus on fair pay and professional development for construction workers, as well as corporate social responsibility.

In this course, the participant will discover how to address social equity within the project team, as it applies to the LEED Social Equity Pilot Credits. Participants will explore how to promote and further social equity by integrating strategies that address identified social and economic needs and disparities among those working on the project. In addition, we will learn about The Davis–Bacon Act of 1931 which was passed when Jim Crow Laws were in effect throughout the Southern United States. The presentation will examine a living wage, life-skills training, human rights, and social responsibility certifications.

The intended audience for this course includes architects, engineers, contractors, owners, building product manufacturers, and other design professionals who want to promote fair trade, human rights, and other equity practices. Course participants will learn how to achieve the Social Equity within the Project Team Pilot Credit for the LEED v4 BD+C rating systems. In addition, participants will learn how to utilize Frameworks to address the social equity issues of this LEED credit.

  2. Discuss how the LEED BD+C pilot credit: Social Equity Within the Project Team addresses social equity for construction workers through workforce pay and benefits
  3. Explain how the LEED BD+C pilot credit: Social Equity Within the Project Team approaches human rights, labor practices, and society
  4. Identify strategies to promote social equity on LEED projects
