About this event

You’re Invited: Festive Seminar & Social with Professor Johan Bollen

Join us on 5th December 2025 at Streatham Campus (Newman Blue) for a special Christmas Lecture and festive social, supported by the Computer Science department and the Centre for Computational Social Science (C2S2) at the University of Exeter.

Event Highlights:

  • Special Seminar:
We’re delighted to welcome our visiting speaker, Professor Johan Bollen (Indiana University School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering). Professor Bollen is internationally recognised for his pioneering work in computational social science, social media analytics, and digital libraries, with over 75 publications and research funded by the NSF, DARPA, NASA, and more.
  • Christmas Lecture Abstract:
Professor Bollen will explore how large-scale web data can be harnessed to address critical challenges in public health, social equality, and beyond. Drawing on his research, he’ll show how digital traces left by millions of users can reveal collective behaviour, inform policy, and drive positive societal change. The talk will include real-world applications, ethical considerations, and a look at the future of data-driven social research.
  • Festive Social:
After the seminar, enjoy festive food and drinks with colleagues and friends.
If you have any dietary requirements or allergies, please let us know by clicking the “Contact Organiser” button below.

About C2S2 at Exeter:
Exeters Centre for Computational Social Science (C2S2, formerly the Q-Step Centre) is a pioneering research and teaching centre that aims to combine data science methods with in-depth substantive knowledge in different social science fields, including politics, sociology, and criminology. Through applying this dual-expertise to their work, researchers at C2S2 are able to produce cutting-edge research that yields actionable, data-driven, insights. The Centre also provides innovative courses, workshops, and uses its Computational Social Science Lab, to aid students and researchers in developing expertise in data science and programming—skills highly valued by employers and researchers.

Why Attend?
Thanks to support from Computer Science and C2S2, this event is a fantastic opportunity to discover how quantitative and computational methods can enhance your studies and future career. Whether you’re new to data or looking to deepen your skills, you’ll find inspiration and practical insights at this talk.

Mark your calendars and get ready for a jolly good time! We look forward to seeing you there.
