Description

Occupational and Environmental Health Seminar

Title: Cannabis Use and the Workplace

Cannabis use for non-medical purposes became legal in Canada on October 17, 2018. Employers and other stakeholders in the occupational health and safety community remain concerned about the potential implications for workplaces. In this presentation, Dr. Nancy Carnide will provide a general overview of what we know (and don’t know) about cannabis use in working populations and describe the findings of two recent studies aimed at understanding patterns of workplace cannabis use, the social norms and perceptions about use among Canadian workers, and the relationship between cannabis and workplace injuries and fatalities.

Presenter: Dr. Nancy Carnide

Dr. Nancy Carnide is an Associate Scientist at the Institute for Work & Health (IWH) with a PhD in epidemiology from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Carnide's research interests lie at the intersection between occupational health and safety and substance use, as well as the mental health of working populations. Her most recent research focuses on the impact of cannabis legalization on Canadian workers. She is currently co-leading two studies related to workplace cannabis use and related perceptions among workers, as well as cannabis involvement in workplace fatalities in Ontario.

The Occupational and Environmental Health Seminar Series is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The series is also approved by Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI), and by the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists (CRBOH) for Registration Maintenance (RM) points.
