OEC Leadership Summit
At the Regional Summits, information will be presented and discussions will be generated around the topics of literacy, school climate and discipline, graduation options for students with disabilities and transition. Sessions will include updates regarding the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), as well as data and trends related to the state of special education in Ohio and at the national level.
*The Leadership Summits will not be providing food or beverage, however there will be vendors on-site and/or in close proximity to each location.
Literacy in Ohio: Building a Strong Foundation:
This session will focus on the importance of high quality language and literacy instruction for all students. Representatives from multiple agency offices will provide data indicating the need for Ohio to focus on literacy, an overview of the Early Literacy Ohio pilot project, and cross agency goals for aligning state-wide initiatives. Participants will examine theoretical frameworks for literacy learning and explore evidence-based literacy practices to promote reading success for all students.
School Climate and Discipline:
This session will address non-academic factors and student learning supports specific to school climate and discipline. Discussion will include key components of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), focusing on accountability indicators related to student supports and Ohio’s efforts to promote positive, safe, and supportive school climates. Participants will review guidance from the Federal Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) on the inclusion of behavioral supports in individualized education programs.
Graduation Planning for Students with Disabilities
According to the Federal Office of Special Education Programs, less than half of Ohio’s students with disabilities graduate with a diploma. This session will address data related to graduation rates, testing requirements and planning for the success of students with disabilities as they transition out of high school. Presenters will share updates on graduation options for students with disabilities, alternate assessment, ESSA, transition and more.
